How to Develop Fluency in Reading, Writing and Listening

How to Develop Fluency in Reading, Writing and Listening?

Most often we hear of speaking fluency and if we introduce this concept of fluency in reading, writing and listening you might feel a bit surprised by that, as a number of other students do. Some find it a bizarre concept. But when we personally train IELTS aspirants in developing fluency in all the four components of IELTS, they tend to believe us. That is why we say that we are the Best IELTS Training Center In Nangloi II.

Speaking Fluency for IELTS

Speaking fluency is the ability of a person to communicate her/his thoughts smoothly and without any internal barriers. In the absence of it one cannot score Band 7 on IELTS test. Absence of speaking fluently can be felt with repetitions of phrases and words; excessive use of fillers such as umm… you know… etc.; repeated pauses; continuous translation before speaking; and repeated correction of mistakes by the speaker. Translation and lack of confidence are the two biggest barrier to fluent speaking. Hence the key to develop speaking fluency is to think and speak in the same language; and develop confidence on one’s speech, voice, content of speech etc.

Reading Fluency for IELTS

A fluent reader engages in the process of reading so much that s/he does not create any conscious interruption to reading. S/he does not check the meaning of the words in the phone/laptop/dictionary by halting reading and remain focused. A fluent reader tries to understand the contextual meaning of not just individual words but the paragraphs and the chapters as a whole. If you are reading a book, then you need to make conceptual bridges para by para; and chapter by chapter to grasp the whole book. If you start reading this way, uninterruptedly, you would start developing reading fluency. This would then ultimately help you in obtaining high band score in IELTS.

Fluency in Writing

Fluency in writing does not simply mean to have a fast hand. I dictate you write very fast does not amount to fluent writing. Fluent writing involves the ability of a candidate to write on a given topic smoothly – without breaking the flow. This requires the candidate to be an independent thinker and need to know how to organize thoughts clearly.

Without developing fluency generally candidates run out of time and are not able to even complete their writing tasks. We train all our students in enhancing writing fluency. This helps them save time for proof-reading out of the precious sixty minutes assigned for writing. They can correct spelling and grammar mistakes and ultimately maximize their score during proof-reading.

 Fluency in Listening

One can develop fluency in listening by enhancing exposure to English listening. Many students demonstrate the tendency to pause / replay the track during the IELST listening practice. This signifies inadequate exposure to listening English. Hence one needs to enhance English listening exposure to enhance fluency in listening. This can be done by watching English news channels or English movies with subtitles turned OFF; listening to English songs as per the interest of the individual.
